Terms of our Coaching Agreement

Our coaching relationship will be documented by a Coaching Agreement regarding scope of the work, fees, scheduled sessions, etc.  I want to emphasis that this is an agreement regarding the coaching commitment, not a contract.  If the relationship isn’t working for either of us, terminating the agreement and parting friends is the best course of action, leaving the door open that perhaps in the future a coaching relationship would be beneficial for the client.

A fairly typical initial coaching agreement is for two session per month for a three month period with a pretty specific goal in mind.  By the end that time the client should have a pretty good sense of the benefit being derived and whether they want to continue.  After an initial coaching agreement is completed, coaching relationships often enter a “maintenance mode” of one session per month for as long as the client finds them helpful.

The client specifically understands that coaching services do not consist of giving advice or making decisions for them.  Coaches ask questions, provide information, and give feedback to help clients make their own choices, develop skills, and make progress toward their goals.  I encourage you to discuss any questions you have with me, especially if there is some aspect of the coaching that does not seem accurate or helpful to you.  You can choose to stop receiving services at any time by notifying me at the address below of your desire to end or suspend the coaching relationship.

The “mechanics” agreed to for the coaching sessions:

  • Client calls the Coach at the schedule time.
  • Client pays coaching fees in advance.
  • Client pays for long distance charges, if any.
  • Sessions may be rescheduled with twenty-four hour notice, but sessions “missed” without notice cannot be “made up.”

In addition, the client asserts:

  1. I understand and agree that I am fully responsible for my physical, mental and emotional wellbeing during my coaching sessions, including my choices and decisions and therefore indemnify and hold harmless my coach for any adverse results from my choices and decisions.
  2. I am aware that I can choose to discontinue coaching at any time.
  3. I understand that coaching is a Professional-Client relationship I have with my coach that is designed to facilitate the creation/development of personal, professional or organizational goals and to develop and carry out a strategy/plan for achieving those goals.
  4. I understand that coaching is a comprehensive process that may involve all areas of my life, including work, finances, health, relationships, education and recreation. I acknowledge that deciding how to handle these issues, incorporate coaching into those areas, and implement my choices is exclusively my responsibility.
  5. I understand that coaching does not involve the diagnosis or treatment of mental disorders as defined by the American Psychiatric Association. I understand that coaching is not a substitute for counseling, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, mental health care or substance abuse treatment and I will not use it in place of any form of diagnosis, treatment or therapy.
  6. I promise that if I am currently in therapy or otherwise under the care of a mental health professional or enter therapy or come under such care while I am an active coaching client, that I have consulted with the mental health care provider regarding the advisability of working with a coach and that this person is aware of my decision to proceed with the coaching relationship.
  7. I understand that information will be held as confidential unless I state otherwise, in writing, except as required by law.
  8. I understand that certain topics may be anonymously and hypothetically shared with other coaching professionals for training and/or consultation purposes.
  9. I understand that coaching is not to be used as a substitute for professional advice by legal, medical, financial, business, spiritual or other qualified professionals. I will seek independent professional guidance for legal, medical, financial, business, spiritual or other matters. I understand that all decisions in these areas are exclusively mine and I acknowledge that my decisions and my actions regarding them are my sole responsibility.
